Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN 250 mg bid-tid for 2 days, adjust by small increments or decrements not more frequently than every 2 days according to the response of the patient. Usual maintenance: 0.5-2 g daily. Elderly Initially 125 mg bid, may be increased gradually. Max: 2 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Phaeochromocytoma, depression, hepatic impairment, jaundice.
Special Precautions
Patients may develop +ve direct Coomb's test. Acquired hemolytic anemia. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Sedation, lethargy, reduced mental capacity, dry mouth, fluid retention, wt gain, impotence, nasal congestion, postural hypotension.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated hypotensive effects w/ diuretics, other antihypertensives & drugs w/ hypotensive effects. Paradoxical antagonism of the hypotensive effects w/ TCAs, antipsychotics & β-blockers. Antagonized hypotensive effects w/ sympathomimetics. May inhibit metabolism w/ entacapone. MAOIs; general anesth.
